The professional paths of our alumni span public and international affairs in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors and having an impact locally, nationally, and internationally. The following highlights some of the many diverse professional positions held by our alumni.
Distinguished Careers
GSPIA Alumni have served as ambassadors, congressmen, top officials at the United Nations, governmental ministers abroad, mayors, university presidents, foundation presidents and corporate leaders.
Leadership in the Profession
GSPIA is one of only nine schools whose faculty members have served as President of NASPAA at least twice. One of our alumni has also served as NASPAA President, and one of our faculty is now serving as ASPA President. An alumnus of GSPIA is currently serving as President of the International
City/County Managers Association--the third GSPIA alumnus to hold this post. An alumnus is also the current President of the Korean Association for Public Administration--the sixth alumnus to hold that position. GSPIA is tied for #2, behind only The Maxwell School at Syracuse University, in the number of NASPAA Dissertation Awards received by its PhD students. A GSPIA doctoral student also won the APPAM Dissertation Award in 2006.
Leadership in the State
Four of our alumni are currently serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Our alumni have also held important positions on the staff of the Governor's Office and in prominent associations throughout the Commonwealth.
Leadership in the Community
In the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, GSPIA alumni have served as mayors, county commissioners, city managers, foundation heads and directors of scores of nonprofit organizations. Two of our alumni have received the prestigious "40 Under 40" leadership award from Pittsburgh magazine, one in 2006 and one in 2007.
