Our Mission
 

The Ridgway Center believes that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. From this starting point, the Center investigates and analyzes past and emerging security problems. It seeks to generate original research and intellectual capital to address the vast array of problems that the US and the international community face.

The Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to generating scholarship that educates the next generation of security analysts. Its purpose is to produce original and impartial analysis that informs policymakers who must confront diverse challenges to state and human security.  



Matthew B. Ridgway

Matthew B. Ridgway, whose name the center bears, is best remembered for salvaging the United Nation's effort during the Korean War. His military career began in 1917, when the Army commissioned him as a Second Lieutenant immediately after he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. By 1930, Ridgway had become an advisor to the Governor General of the Philippines, and within a few years, he rose to the rank of Assistant Chief of Staff of the 4th Army. Read more.

 

Spring 2010 Student Travel Grant Competition Announced

GSPIA is pleased to announce the Spring 2010 Student Travel Grant competition. GSPIA offers modest funding to support travel for internships and to present professional papers. Travel must be completed before the fall semester. The deadline for applications is Mon., Mar. 15.

Pitt Political Review, GSPIA Edition Announces Call for Papers

The GSPIA edition of The Pitt Political Review announces its 2010 call for papers. The publication welcomes papers that explore diverse policy issues and provide innovative perspectives on domestic and global political, economic and security questions. The deadline for submission is Mon., Feb. 1.

Army War College Delegation to visit GSPIA

The University of Pittsburgh’s Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies will host a group discussion with members of the U.S. Army War College’s Eisenhower Series College Program. The Eisenhower Series College Program is an academic outreach program established by the Department of the Army to encourage dialogue on national security and other public policy issues between students of the U.S. Army War College and the civilian public.

“Human Nature: Terrorism and Conflict” Lecture

The University of Pittsburgh’s Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies, the Ford Institute for Human Security and the Professor Paul M. Katz Lecture on Economic and Social Development will present a lecture by Dr. Dipak K. Gupta, director of International Security & Conflict Resolution at San Diego State University. This lecture titled, “Human Nature: Terrorism and Conflict,” will be presented at 12 – 1 p.m. Wed., March 24 in room 3911. GSPIA students and faculty are invited to attend.
