About
the Major in Nongovernmental Organizations and Civil
Society
Much
of the work that has defined change around the world
has been the domain of nongovernmental organizations
(NGOs). Whether alleviating hunger, advocating for
human rights, or promoting public health, the people
who work on behalf of NGOs have contributed to countless
causes in search of a greater good.
The
nongovernmental organizations and civil society (NGOCS)
major prepares students for a future in a world where
NGOs are committed to social change in the shifting
landscape of the human condition. Students acquire
knowledge in management strategies and politics, and
can also take courses in related fields such as social
work, public health, or specific geographic regions.
Our
NGOCS students have the opportunity to develop experience
through internships, both domestic and international,
as well as the chance to build expertise in issues
such as grant writing, education, or health care that
will serve them well following graduation. Joint degree
programs also allow students to pursue such disciplines
as information sciences. Our graduates go on to pursue
careers in AIDS research, relief work, or with organizations
locally and abroad.
For
students interested in internships, meetings, or conferences
in the nation's capital, Pittsburgh is located a half-day's
drive from Washington D.C. It is also home to many
internationally-focused NGOs, such as Global Links,
which matches surplus medical equipment to sites in
Latin America . Students are able to acquire a deeper
level of experience here through meaningful work in
which their contributions are not only recognized,
but also make a difference.
Our
faculty members are renowned for their international
expertise and are committed to giving students detailed,
real-world guidance in their studies and networking
to help them shape career paths to meet their goals.
Whether it's specialized coursework through cross-registration
with another school or advice on potential jobs after
graduation, faculty members are available to offer
personalized attention.
Through
our NGOCS program, we bring cutting-edge knowledge
to local development within a global context. We are
able to work with individual governments, regions,
and communities around the globe to improve the quality
of life.
We approach our role as advocates of change. Our courses
and our faculty seek to inspire your sense to make
a difference. If you know what you want to do to change
the world, we will empower you by honing your skills
so that you can achieve your vision.
