A
Commitment to Successful Management of Nonprofit Organizations
Nonprofit
organizations respond to needs in our communities,
raise awareness of social and political issues,
support the arts, preserve history, and work in
countless ways to improve the quality of life throughout
the world. Nonprofit organizations advance the values
of democracy by encouraging the development of and
participation in voluntary associations that promote
the public good. As the nonprofit sector continues
its dynamic growth, nonprofit organizations face
new management challenges in carrying out their
missions.
Founded in
2001 by Professor Leon Haley as an outreach enterprise
of the University of Pittsburgh 's Graduate School
of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), the GSPIA
Nonprofit Clinic has a dual mission of graduate-level
education and providing capacity-building assistance
to nonprofit organizations. The GSPIA Nonprofit Clinic
connects teams of students with directors of nonprofit
organizations to collaborate on some of the most critical
issues facing nonprofit organizations, such as:
Strategic Planning
Program Evaluation
Business Plan Development
Community Needs Assessment
Board Development
Financial Management
Grant Writing
Accountability Auditing
Marketing and Public Awareness
GSPIA is committed
to providing students with experiential education
and service learning, and at the same time, helping
to improve the performance and effectiveness of nonprofit
organizations by increasing the skills and knowledge
of leaders, members, and employees. In this spirit
of collaboration, technical assistance by the GSPIA
Nonprofit Clinic student team is low cost and includes
the assessment and analysis of the nonprofit organization's
present situation and how the GSPIA Nonprofit Clinic
can assist, determining what may be a problem or shortcoming,
and developing a written plan of action.
An
Advantage for Students
Students who
undertake technical assistance projects through the
GSPIA Nonprofit Clinic gain real-life experience helping
nonprofit organizations solve problems, while earning
1-3 credits for independent study or satisfying a
course requirement for a final project. C areer networking
and resume-building opportunities are other reasons
students volunteer with the clinic.
Testimonials
"The team.thoroughly
evaluated our mission, history, and programming in
order to develop a strategic analysis. It was a pleasure
working with each member of the team and the results
far surpassed our expectations. The GSPIA team provided
the level of professionalism needed to move RTP [Rebuilding
Together - Pittsburgh ] into the future. Now, with
strategic goals and a course of action in place, we
can continue to rebuild lives, rebuild homes, and
rebuild communities."

"The teams
of students and faculty that were assigned our two
projects and developed our revised Strategic Plan
and Cash Flow Analysis, respectively, have provided
us with professional and user-friendly documents
that will prove crucial in our efforts to strengthen
our programs and improve our management practices.
The City of Pittsburgh 's not-for-profit sector should
be so fortunate to have a resource such as the Clinic
to call its own, both in terms of available technical
assistance and as convener of regional issues."

for client outcome.the experience with the Nonprofit
Clinic has been positive and effective. The consultative
experience was highly professional, relevant, and
effective concerning issues related to the agency."
