Charli Carpenter Promotes New Book Born of War:
Protecting Children of Sexual Violence Survivors in Conflict Zones
Assistant Professor Charli Carpenter recently traveled to Canada to support her newest book Born of War: Protecting Children of Sexual Violence Survivors in Conflict Zones. The book launch, which was organized by the University of Alberta's Children and War Research Initiative, also included a presentation by Carpenter about the human rights of these children.
Her book is a compilation of case studies examining children born as a result of rape and sexual exploitation during times of war. The case studies span different countries and perspectives and include the viewpoints of both academics and humanitarian practitioners. This project has been underway since 2004 when Pitt's Women's Studies Department hosted one of two interdisciplinary workshops; GSPIA and the Ford Institute for Human Security hosted the other workshop. The project is also international, featuring contributors from seven different countries.
Born of War outlines a variety of risks faced by children born of sexual violence and aims to raise global awareness of and response to the problem.
Carpenter has received assistance for her project on children born of wartime rape from the National Science Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the following Pitt students and staff: Betcy Jose-Thota; Robyn Wheeler; Robert Filar; Sandy Monteverde; Angela Gasparetti; and Emily Huisman.
