4th Annual Regional Equitable Development Summit
"Most Livable Region by Growing Opportunity for All"
On November 16, 2007 GSPIA and Sustainable Pittsburgh presented the 4th Annual Regional Equitable Development Summit, and members of the community joined urban expert and keynote speaker David Rusk and GSPIA Associate Dean David Y. Miller for stimulating discussion focused on improving the region's long-term equity.
The one-day conference, part of GSPIA's Annual Wherrett Lecture on Local Governing, served as a catalyst for new collaborations that will increase the region's productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability. While Pittsburgh is increasingly recognized as a great city in which to live, the racial disparities gap makes it difficult for many regional residents to take advantage of opportunities to improve their quality of life.
In addition to Rusk's address, nine panelists representing key local organizations spoke on innovations for regional equitable development in southwestern Pennsylvania. The panel was moderated by Sala Udin, Coro Center for Civic Leadership. Each panelist offered insights on the current work of some of the region's leaders for equitable development. Conference attendees also had opportunities to share their thoughts and ideas on how to best achieve reform when panelists hosted several breakout sessions.
The conference, which hosted more than 200 participants, was an important step in making innovative regional initiatives a reality. Videos of Miller's keynote introduction and Rusk's keynote address are featured below.
